A Passion for Pineapples

Pineapple are rocking our block here at Juicey Lucy's and we wanted to share some of the incredible benefits of this wonderful fruit.  Pineapples are native to South America, and were introduced to Europe by Columbus. The fruit is actually a compound body, composed of many flowers, which become tiny fruits and then fuse together around a central core. Our pineapples are grown in Mexico, so they don't have to take a trans-Pacific flight to come to you.

Pineapples are high in fiber, and also contain vast amounts of Vitamin C. As such they are great for your skin, joints, teeth and gums, as well as respiratory health and boosting immunity. Vitamin C is an effective counter against free-radical damage in human tissue, and is necessary for collagen synthesis in your body.

Many digestive enzyme supplements contain bromelain, which is found in pineapple. Bromelain helps you to digest protein, and also has anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting, and anti-cancer properties. Bromelain can help against indigestion, and it's anti-inflammatory properties are helpful in alleviating arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. While all parts of the pineapple contain trace amounts of bromelain, the enzyme is at it's highest concentration in the stem and the core of the fruit. Juicing pineapple is a great way to get the benefits of bromelain, as the core fruit can be tough.

One cup of fresh pineapple contains 75% of your body's daily requirement for manganese, which is essential for building and maintaining strong bones and connective tissues.

Pineapples, like most fruit, have been shown to help prevent macular degeneration, which is the primary cause of vision loss in adults. Three servings of fruit a day can lower your risk of macular degeneration by 35%.

JLu talks about GMOs

Genetically Modified Organisms are much in the news lately, and it's time for Juicey Lucy's to weigh in and let you all know our stance on the topic.

There is much confusion and misinformation in every corner of the Internet in regards to this vitally important topic, and we encourage everyone to educate themselves. While some genetic modification of food organisms (called cis-species modifications) creates hybrids that could viably happen through natural cross-pollination, there are also the more disturbing practice of trans-species modification, combining DNA that could never be meshed naturally. We are concerned about evidence that some toxins and viruses being introduced to plants remain active and harmful within the human body. We believe that life should not be patented and that small farmers should be encouraged and protected. We believe that the health of people, animals and the environment should be put ahead of profits. We believe that the "substantial equivalence" testing procedures to verify the safety of GMO food are flawed and insufficient, and are likely to miss many dangers. We believe that because of gene flow and cross pollination, GMO crops substantially infringe upon your rights to know exactly what you are eating, and to make healthy, informed, safe choices.

Juicey Lucy's remains a committed non-GMO kitchen and an active voice in the fight for food justice. You have our promise that we will never use GMO food products and strongly encourage you to take the same stance in your own homes, for your health, for the health of future generations, and for the health of our one and only home, Spaceship Earth.

Ways to avoid Genetically Modified Organisms in your food:

1) Read labels. While there is no law requiring GMO food to be labeled as such, most companies that do not use GMOs are loud and proud in proclaiming it. Look for labels marking a product as GMO-free.

2) Avoid buying processed foods. Cook more, and decrease your family's reliance on convenience foods. When eating out, look for restaurants that serve 100% organic foods, like Juicey Lucy's.

3) Buy 100% organic. US regulations do not allow anything to be labelled "100% organic" if it has been genetically modified, contains GMO ingredients or, in the case of animal products, has been fed GMO feed.

4) Know your PLU codes. Look for the numbered sticker on grocery store produce. If it is a 4-digit number, the food is not organic. If it is a 5-digit number beginning with an 8, it is GMO. However, do not trust that GM foods will have a PLU identifying it as such, because PLU labeling is still optional. If it is a 5-digit number beginning with a 9, it is organic.

5) Buy from local organic farmers rather than big-business agriculture.

6) Above all, educate yourself and others. Make sure you know what GMOs are, your reasons for avoiding them, and the real ramifications of allowing one or two corporations to have such control over your food supply. Food is life, and your food should be your choice. An important part of education is talking to your children. Make sure they know WHY you don't want them trading their organic lunch for a bag of chips and a soft drink. Don't just arbitrarily forbid junk food, be sure your kids know just how scary artificial food is, and they'll be less likely to succumb to vending vachines and schoolyard trades.

To your very good health!

But, why no straws?

Juicey Lucy's is committed to your health, vitality, and protecting our environment. Frequently,  we're asked why we don't carry straws. We ask that you sip and savor: don't suck. Here's why:

  • Contact with the enzymes in your saliva is an important first step in digestion. Did you know 50% of your digestion happens in your mouth?
  • Straws enable you to drink too quickly and increase the amount of air you swallow, both of which result in bloating, gas, and indigestion.
  • Even biodegradable straws inhibit your taste experience by limiting contact with your taste buds.
  • Plastic straws contain BPA, a chemical that breaks down and releases harmful toxins into your body when reused.
  • Each day, an estimated 500 million disposable plastic straws are tossed away in the U.S. alone!
